Check out [[Daily Reading]] for context. #### [How to Create Luck](https://www.swyx.io/create-luck) This article puts forth the argument that "luck" need not be as random as we tend to generally think of it. It also puts in place a framework to understand luck and how one can use this to generate one's own luck. Here are some of my favourite bits. The concept of [Luck Surface Area](https://www.codusoperandi.com/posts/increasing-your-luck-surface-area) emphasises that while the occurrence of luck itself is random, we are in a position to maximise our exposure to this "perceived randomness" by simply **doing** and **telling** more (If you like a video explanation, [this is pretty cool](https://twitter.com/elzr/status/1381105950602461189)) The article describes four kinds of luck. - Accidental - You are passively waiting for serendipity. Your luck pretty much depends on where you land. (eg: privilege of birth). Most people would think of this as the only kind of luck. - Active - You get lucky by constantly putting yourself in a position to capture luck. For example, you are more likely to find that perfect job the more you apply for jobs. Modern society might like to think of "hustle culture" as a form of active luck. - Prepared - You get lucky by observing a "lucky event" that most would generally miss. For example, [scientific breakthroughs such as the discovery of Penicillin](https://www.healio.com/news/endocrinology/20120325/penicillin-an-accidental-discovery-changed-the-course-of-medicine). This is what we would generally call a "happy accident". - Magnetic - You just get good things happen to you because of how you conduct yourself. I am not too sure the exact nature of this maybe because I don't entirely understand it yet. But, it does feel like a form of luck where one is both actively pursuing "good opportunity" and is also training oneself to be in a position to capture anything remotely close to that opportunity. As an example, think of a sports personality. The author also lays out some actionable steps on how to create luck. ![](day_2_create_luck.png) [Image Source](https://www.swyx.io/create-luck) So, how would you create your luck? --- #### Like what you see?
