Check out [[Daily Reading]] for context.
Today, I have got two articles
1. The Paradox of Tolerance
2. Horror stories of Cryonics: The gruesome fates of futurists hoping for immortality
#### [The Paradox of Tolerance](https://markmanson.net/the-paradox-of-tolerance)
*What is tolerance? Why is tolerance necessary? Why is it so hard to achieve?* - This 2 minute read from Mark Manson throws some light on these questions.
Karl Popper in the 1940s suggested that if a society has to be tolerant, then it would require the tolerant to be intolerant towards the intolerant. Hence the paradox.
For simplicity, think of it this way - If you have tolerant and intolerant people in society, the tolerant by nature would tolerate the intolerant. But, the intolerant would not tolerate the tolerant. This would fundamentally result in an intolerant society.
*What is the definition of tolerance?*. You would know from recent political debates that people tend to believe that "anything that is different to their foundational beliefs are not to be tolerated".
Hence, if society has to hang in balance w.r.t tolerance, then it would mean people need to be willing to co-exist with ideas that are dissimilar to their own.
But, where does one draw the line? Where does "a different idea" crossover to a "harmful idea". And who defines harm? Who becomes the authority?
I don't have the answer. I am sure very few of us would. But, merely remembering the questions would help guide one towards a solution.
#### [Horror stories of cryonics: The gruesome fates of futurists hoping for immortality](https://bigthink.com/the-future/cryonics-horror-stories/)
Cryonics is a practice dedicated to the crypto preservation of the human body. As you can imagine, this is [widely considered pseudo science](https://www.technologyreview.com/2015/09/15/109906/the-false-science-of-cryonics/). But hey, it sounds pretty cool! Imagine having the ability to have your head frozen after death, wake up decades later with a body of a robot, and then go on to live your life in a new society!
Sounds straight out of a movie, does it not?
Just one problem with this - **It does not work ...**
Read the article to know more. Trust me, you won't be disappointed if you can take some light-weight dark humour!
