Check out [[Daily Reading]] for context. ## Today's Picks of the Internet #### [Understanding Convergent Evolution in Data Engineering](https://www.dedp.online/part-1/2-overview-dedp/understanding-convergent-evolution.html) A chapter of the [Data Engineering Design Patterns](https://www.dedp.online/about-this-book.html) book. This has been written by the [author of one of my favourite data engineering blogs](https://www.ssp.sh/). A convergent evolution (CE) in biology is when two distinct species undergo different evolutionary changes to achieve a similar outcome. For example, *flying*. A bird and a bee, can both fly. But, they do so differently. In the context of data engineering (or anything in the data space), there seems to be a constant need to introduce new terminology. Most times, this could be just *old wine in a new bottle*. Simon advises caution against this and uses CE as an example to convey that *just because something new is called something different, its not necessarily fundamentally different from something that has been around for a long time*. Personally, I am excited to see him finish this book and add more detail around it. This could be massively useful for a young data person such as myself, to make sense of the vast terminology of the modern data stack ([[Honest Thoughts about the Modern Data Stack]]). A favourite quote > Parlance travels faster than technology. #### [Personal Discipline: What Is It and How To Create One](https://durmonski.com/self-improvement/personal-discipline/) This article from Ivaylo Durmonski is a *balanced* take on the attainment of personal discipline. If you are someone who has struggled with the concept of self discipline in the past, this article is a good read. It feels like a hot coffee on a chilly winter morning. My favourite excerpt from the article > And while you might not mind the unvarying nature of your daily activities. Others will surely complain about your monotonous routine. > > Why? > > For starters, other people will conclude that you are missing out on the joys of life. Since your predictable and uninspiring lifestyle doesn’t include watching trendy Netflix shows nor visiting exotic places. You will be publicly acknowledged as boring. --- #### Like what you see?
