#### [Rapoport's Rules: How to Criticise Constructively](https://themindcollection.com/rapoports-rules/)
- Rapoport's Rules are four guidelines that help you criticise arguments constructively
- The aim is to encourage productive and civil discourse
**The Guidelines**
1. Restate your opponent's position - Help them understand that you are trying to see the world from their eyes i.e tactical empathy
2. Find common ground - At a fundamental level, both your motivations could be similar. Get to that and establish a baseline
3. Reflect on lessons learned - In spite of disagreeing entirely, acknowledge the opponent's experience or opinions and showcase what you have learnt new (could just be a new perspective, even if you do not hold that yourself)
4. Make your counterargument - Talk through your position
